Your Skin Knows When You're Stressed

Your Skin Knows When You're Stressed

By Courtney Williamson, Pelliá Beauty

Have you ever noticed that your skin seems to have terrible timing? You have a big presentation at work, you're planning a wedding, moving into a new home, or juggling a dozen things at once, and suddenly your skin decides it's the perfect time to become dry, irritated, or extra sensitive. For years, I thought it was just bad luck. As an entrepreneur, I've experienced plenty of stressful seasons. Building a business is exciting, but it also comes with long days, sleepless nights, and a never-ending to-do list. During one particularly stressful period, I noticed my own skin becoming drier and more reactive than ever before. I kept reaching for different products, assuming I just hadn't found the right one. But what if the problem wasn't only my skincare routine?  The more I learned, the more I discovered there is actually a name for the connection between stress and skin: psychodermatology. It's the study of how our emotional well-being and our skin influence one another. While we often think of skincare as something we apply to our bodies, our emotional wellbeing can also affect how our skin looks and feels. That realization completely changed the way I think about self-care.

Instead of asking, What's the best moisturizer? I started asking, What can I do to help myself slow down? One answer kept coming back to me: take a bath. There's something about a bath that naturally encourages us to pause. You can't answer emails while you're soaking in the tub. You aren't folding laundry, driving to your next appointment, or checking another task off your to-do list. For twenty minutes, you're simply present. The warm water, calming scents, and quiet create a rare opportunity to step away from the constant demands of the day. That's why I believe bath soaks are about so much more than skincare. Yes, they can help soften and nourish dry, sensitive skin, but they also create a ritual. Instead of rushing through another task, you're intentionally giving yourself permission to rest. That idea eventually inspired me to create Pelliá, a body care brand built around one simple philosophy: where skincare meets self-care. Our bath soaks combine skin-loving ingredients like coconut milk, coconut oil, vitamin E, and mineral-rich salts with thoughtfully crafted aromatherapy blends. They're also free from artificial dyes and colorants, making them a gentle option for people with dry and sensitive skin. But more importantly, they're designed to encourage something many of us don't do often enough: slow down.

I think we're beginning to see a shift in the beauty industry. People aren't just looking for products anymore. They're looking for experiences. They're looking for rituals that help them disconnect from the busyness of life, even if it's only for twenty minutes. The truth is, none of us can eliminate stress completely. Life will always be busy. But we can create small moments that remind us to take care of ourselves.

Sometimes beautiful skin starts with a great moisturizer. Sometimes it starts with taking a bath, taking a deep breath, and giving yourself permission to simply be. And I think that's a conversation worth having.
