BostonMints and Adamo Day Spa: A Symbiotic Relationship

BostonMints and Adamo Day Spa: A Symbiotic Relationship

IWe were fortunate to interview Joanne Ilacqua, the owner of PBC pop-in partner, Adamo Spa in Scituate Harbor, MA and also BostonMints, a clean lip gloss brand, part of our pop-in at Petal + Hive in Saratoga Springs, NY. As we know, having one beauty brand often leads to another. Learn how she does it:

How do you juggle being a spa owner and brand owner?

It’s definitely a balance, but the spa & the brand really go hand in hand. BostonMints came directly from my makeup work and time with clients. So even though it’s a lot to juggle, it feels seamless because the two naturally support each other.

What inspired you to launch your brand(s)?

Launching my brand felt like a natural next step. I started in the beauty industry as a makeup artist, esthetician, and massage therapist, and eventually became a spa owner. I’ve always had a love for fashion, trends, and makeup artistry. Music and art runs in my family, and I was known early on for having a strong creative vision. Doing bridal makeup and destination services at the spa, I wanted something more personal I could offer clients, a way for them to take a piece of that experience home. That’s what inspired me to create Boston Mints, a product line that reflects my artistry and gives back to the clients who’ve supported me.

What changes have you seen in the spa industry?

Clients today are much more informed, they really care about what they’re putting on their skin and are drawn to clean, natural products. I’ve always used natural and organic skincare, so I love that the industry has moved in that direction. At the same time, people are looking for visible results, especially when it comes to anti-aging but they want those results without going the invasive route. That’s why treatments like micro current and collagen boosting have become so popular. I focus on services that deliver results while still offering a sense of calm and relaxation. In such a fast-paced world, clients are craving both self-care and effectiveness and I believe you don’t have to sacrifice one for the other.

What trends are driving the industry in the future?

Today’s clients want results without downtime -- effective, non-invasive treatments that support healthy, youthful skin. There’s a strong shift toward clean beauty and natural-looking results. I believe the future of the spa industry is about balance: combining advanced technology with relaxation and wellness. It’s not just about looking good , it’s about feeling good in your own skin.

What do you love most about your job?

I love mentoring my team, teaching, guiding, and watching them grow brings me so much fulfillment. I’m always curious and hands-on, constantly learning: whether it’s discovering new spa treatments, exploring ingredient formulations, or experimenting with skincare that supports true skin health As a makeup artist, I see the face as a canvas. I love color theory, blending techniques, and the creative flow that happens when I bring a look to life. Learning about makeup formulations is just as exciting to me, the balance between ingredients, wearability, and how they feel on the skin fascinates me. It’s truly a blend of science and art. I also love interactive clients, hearing their stories, learning about their travels, and building real relationships. There’s something special about making someone feel seen, heard, and beautiful — whether through a transformative facial, makeup for a big day, or simply helping them glow with confidence. That’s the magic, and it’s what keeps me inspired every single day.

What's next for you?

I’m continuing to grow Boston Mints into a full makeup line, blending my passion for color, skincare, and wellness with clean, feel-good formulas. I’m also deeply committed to giving back. I’m certified through the Look Good Feel Better program, supporting women going through treatments with skincare and cosmetics both at my spa. I donate a portion of every Swan Boat lip gloss sale to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and I love offering gift certificates or services to those in need. As I grow, I want that growth to reflect appreciation, for my clients, for the community, and for the opportunities I’ve been given. And I’m especially excited to keep connecting with other women-led businesses like yourself — learning, creating, and supporting each other along the way.
